There is a magical tree deep within the forest. The fairies call it the Tree of Wisdom. It will answer any question asked of it.

Maleficent to Snow White and Prince Charming src

The Tree of Wisdom is a magical plant featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It first appears in the thirteenth episode of the fourth season.

Properties

The Tree of Wisdom has the power to answer any question asked of it, but it can only be unlocked by two of the most valiant heroes. Questions are asked by placing one's palm on two rocks by the tree, with one hand print on each. When the question is asked, the tree changes color and starts to glow. However, if the people looking for answer are not worthy, they will be rejected and thrown backward, away from the tree. ("Unforgiven")

History

Before First Curse

Fearing the impending doom of the Queen's curse, Cruella De Vil, Maleficent and Ursula seek out Snow White and Prince Charming to ask the Tree of Wisdom how to counter it. Since the tree will only answer questions from those who possess two of the most valiant hearts, the couple are the ones who can undertake the task. On the journey, the three women escort them there, but after camping out one night, they discover Snow White and Prince Charming gone in the morning. The royal pair, having run off earlier, reach the Tree of Wisdom, and Snow White asks the tree how they can defeat the Queen's curse. A beat later, the tree detects Snow White's unborn child, which harbors a heart with a potential for evil. Thrown backwards by the tree's magic, the princess and prince are then found by the villains. Perplexed at why the tree rejected their question, the trio refuse to allow them to leave until they figure out the reason. Examining Snow White's overall physique closely, Maleficent recognizes the early signs of pregnancy, and she goes on to detail the child, although born of true love, can become evil. Deciding they will find another way to defeat the curse, the three women depart. ("Unforgiven")

Trivia

On-Screen Notes

  • The golden symbols carved into the rocks in front of the tree are Anglo-Saxon runes.[1] However, they produce nothing but gibberish when translated. ("Unforgiven")
