Rumpel has been confirmed to be around 300 years old. In a conversation with August, Rum says that Baelfire "crossed the barriers of time and space." He also believed that August (who is around 35 is his son). Either he doesn't know how old his son is or his son should be in his 30s. My guess is that Baelfire could be any age 14+ since he disappeared at 14. We don't know when he appeared in our world in relation to the rest of the people in the Enchanted Forest.
He really travelled through time, and arrived some years before the curse took everyone to Storybrooke.
He actually only travelled through space and some how survived 300 years.
The time relation between the Enchanted Forest and the Land Without Magic is similar to the Narnia-Land Without Magic: Time flows slower or faster each time. So maybe 300 years passed in the Enchanted Forest, but only few years in the Land Without Magic.
I'm continuing with the theory that Neal/Baelfire is also Peter Pan. He arrived here more than two hundred years ago and gets lost is this world, therefore ending up where all lost boys do, Neverland. He lives here for many years (Hinting that line "More years that you can think of") being inmortal with the persona of Peter Pan. Being here, he becomes enemies with Hook for maybe an unknow reason, or maybe because Hook knows who Peter Pan really is. Years later, Hook is able to capture Peter and asks for a way to kill his father, to which he replies by telling him about the dagger. Hook returns to the Enchanted Forest to ask Belle for this dagger and Peter Pan, now having his identity uncovered returns to our world at about the time the Dark Curse was enacted, now becoming Neal. So, if he was fourteen when he got here twenty eight years ago, he might as well be in his forties as you say. This is the only way I can figure out Baelfire kept himself alife for all those years.

Then I think that prooves that he didn't travel through TIME and space, but only space.

Most people just assume Neal is 35, because Mr. Gold thought August might be Baelfire. Neal being 42, would make more sense. Though, I doubt OUaT would ever state this out right.... as it could be uncomfortable, for the audience.
Why does everyone (except for Killian) automatically think Bae came to our world when the curse happened? Maybe something else happened in Neverland about 7 years after Hook had left that made him come here?
I see some visits to Neverland in OUAT's third season may occur. (if copyrights allow)
If you watch the Canadian promo on "the queen is dead" page Neal/Bae says that he knows of Hook because here "the world without magic" was not the first place he came to when he left rumplestiltskin in the enchanted forest.
