This is not just an apple. It's a weapon.

—The Evil Queen to Hansel and Gretel about the Poisoned Apple src

The Poisoned Apple is a magical plant featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It first appears in the ninth episode of the first season.

History

Before First Curse

Maleficent creates the sleeping curse to use on her enemy Sleeping Beauty, and Regina obtains the Dark Curse from Rumplestiltskin; and sometime after the two trade their respective curses. ("The Thing You Love Most")

The apple has the Sleeping Curse placed upon it so that if someone willingly bites into it, they will fall into a deep sleep while their body is their tomb and they are tormented by their regrets, all the while appearing to be dead. However, the Evil Queen is unaware that, as with all curses, it can be broken by true love's kiss. At some point, the apple comes into the possession of the Blind Witch and the Evil Queen sends Hansel and Gretel to retrieve it in exchange for the whereabouts of their father, the Woodcutter. ("True North")

The Evil Queen later offers the cursed apple to Snow White, who willingly bites into it, fully aware of the consequences in order to save the life of her true love, Prince Charming. Moments after Snow White bites the apple, she collapses and drops the apple. As it rolls away, it falls into a portal Jefferson has created in present day Storybrooke. Prince Charming breaks the sleeping curse and awakens Snow White from her slumber. ("An Apple Red as Blood," "Pilot," "A Land Without Magic")

During First Curse
Wishing to get rid of Emma, Regina contracts Jefferson to fetch the poisoned apple with his magic hat in exchange for forgetting his true identity. After baking the apple into a turnover, she gifts it to Emma, who has decided to leave town permanently. When Henry sees the apple turnover, he insists it is poisoned. To prove it, he takes a bite and falls under a Sleeping Curse. While Henry is in a coma, Emma and Regina attempt to find a cure. However, they are too late and he passes away. As Emma kisses his forehead as a final farewell, she revives him with the power of true love's kiss and also breaks the curse. ("An Apple Red as Blood," "A Land Without Magic")

Trivia

Props Notes

  • There is a huge figurine of a red apple on Emma's kitchen counter in her Boston apartment.[1] ("Pilot")
  • In "Pilot", Mary Margaret receives not an apple from her student at school, but a pear.[2] This is fitting as she does not like apples.
  • When Mary Margaret is on the phone with Emma in "The Miller's Daughter", she is nervously playing with a red apple.[3]
