Regina to Little John src

Little John, also known as Traveler One,[1] is a character on ABC's Once Upon a Time and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. He débuts in the third episode of the third season of Once Upon a Time and is portrayed by co-star Jason Burkart.

Little John is based on the character of the same name from the Robin Hood ballads.

History

Before First Curse

In the Enchanted Forest, Little John is part of Robin Hood's band of Merry Men, who make a living by stealing from rich people. However, Robin retires after marrying Marian and starting a tavern business. One day, Little John gains intel about King Midas' carriage that will be travelling on the road tomorrow with only a few guards, and he tries to convince Robin to join him on the heist. Robin refuses, having left that life behind, but when the Sheriff of Nottingham threatens his business, he gains help from Little John and the Merry Men to defy him. Pilfering the Sheriff's gold, Robin then gives it to Little John, who distributes it to the peasants. Realizing there is good that can come out of being a thief, he decides to go back, but only to take from the wealthy and give to the poor. ("Heart of Gold")

After successfully stealing from a rich man's carriage, everyone rejoices at their campsite. A new recruit, Will, procures a large chest of treasures and is accepted into their group. Will suggests their next destination should be Maleficent's castle. Robin accepts only after being convinced the rewards are worth the risk, as Maleficent is currently away, and the hordes of gold inside the castle will be enough to feed many poor villagers. Once they break in, Robin emphasizes that only the gold will be taken and nothing else. Following the success, they once again regroup at camp, but are interrupted by the booming voice of Maleficent, who demands the return of a stolen item or suffer the consequences. Angrily, Robin calls the thief among them to step forward, but no one does. Unknown to Little John, Will previously took a looking glass from the castle, and later escapes during the night. ("Forget Me Not")

After First Curse
Little John and several other Merry Men arrive upon a castle to get back to their leader, Robin Hood. When they hear a strange noise inside, they burst in to find Robin with two strangers, Mulan and Neal. After being reassured the two are not a threat, Roland, Robin's son, crawls out from under Little John and runs into his father's arms. Neal, who has been searching for a pathway to another world, suggests Roland can try an incantation to call forth the Shadow. Once Robin Hood learns the Shadow is notorious for stealing away young boys, he is resistant to the idea. Eventually, he gives in after Neal, Rumplestiltskin's son, reminds him his father saved Robin's wife, which allowed her to give birth to Roland and as such, a debt is owed. At nightfall, Little John brings Roland back to the castle in preparation for summoning the Shadow, which goes well, and Neal hitches a ride back to Neverland. At nightfall, Mulan arrives at the Merry Men's campsite to join their group after previously being offered a place among them by Robin. ("Quite a Common Fairy")

Before Second Curse

In the Enchanted Forest, Little John, Friar Tuck, and Robin Hood scare off a flying monkey in the woods to save the Evil Queen and Snow White. Once Little John catches a glimpse of the stepmother and stepdaughter pair, he remarks, in confusion, over why Snow White is with the Queen, who has a notoriously bad reputation. The Queen responds by insulting Little John's stature, which Robin apologizes for. The three men join rest of the Queen and Snow White's party as they their way on foot to old palace for shelter. Once they arrive, the Queen discovers someone is already residing inside as there is a protection spell keeping intruders out. Since safety comes first, Robin suggests Sherwood Forest as an alternative for the time being. ("New York City Serenade")

As they depart for Sherwood Forest, as Little John and the others are walking, a flying monkey attacks them, though Regina quickly disposes of the beast by turning it into a stuffed animal. In a group discussion, Belle shares knowledge about the flying monkey's origins in the land of Oz, so Regina determines the person in the palace is the Wicked Witch. A plan is set up to wait for Regina to bring the shield down and then mobilize the whole group into the palace. Once night falls, Grumpy gives the signal when he spots the dissipating barrier, meaning Regina was able to lower it, so everyone begins assembling towards their destination. ("Witch Hunt")

During Second Curse
After the new curse is cast, Little John becomes a resident of Storybrooke and remains tight-knit with members of the Merry Men. One day, he steals a crossbow from a store and later shows it to his friends in the woods, insisting that the theft was harmless since the proprietor looked rich to him. Little John spots a wild turkey, attempting to shoot it for a passing meal, but misses. While his friends follow closely behind him, he chases the animal to the town line. Suddenly, Little John is carried off by a flying monkey as Robin Hood and the rest of the group look on helplessly. After being bitten by the creature, he is later found unconscious in the woods by David, Hook and the Merry Men. They take Little John to the hospital, where he begins convulsing while Dr. Whale attempts to sedate him. Seemingly unable to control himself, Little John screams in agony as a tail forms on his body and whips everyone back. He then rapidly transforms into a full-fledged flying monkey, giving a fearsome roar, before crashing through a glass window and escaping. ("Witch Hunt")

After Second Curse

During the last confrontation between the Wicked Witch, Zelena, against Emma and her allies, they attempt to stop a time spell from being enacted by stealing the collected ingredients: David's sword, Regina's heart, Mr. Gold's brain and Mary Margaret's newborn baby. Zelena sends a flying monkey to distract David and Robin Hood, but eventually she is defeated by Regina's light magic. As the flying monkey attacks again, David nearly decapitates the creature, who reverts to Little John, because Regina stripped Zelena of her magic. ("Kansas")

When an snow monster attacks the town, Little John is with "Marian" and Robin Hood in the forest, where the trio are joined by David, Emma and Hook. Attempting to weaken the creature, he fires an arrow at it, but this only agitates the beast. Hoping magic will do the trick, Emma materializes an energy ball at the monster, but this only angers it into knocking everyone unconscious. Marian, previously absent from the battle, rushes forward to defend her friends with an aimed arrow, but she too is knocked away. Moments later, Regina magically obliterates the monster as everyone else awakens unharmed from the prior attack. ("A Tale of Two Sisters")

Marian, afflicted by ice magic, freezes into a shell of former self. Distraught after failing to restore his wife with true love's kiss, Robin leaves his son in Little John's care while he and Regina attempt to figure out a way to save Marian's life. ("Rocky Road")

In the alternate reality caused by Heroes and Villains, Little John is a member of the Merry Men. He later attends Robin and Zelena's wedding ceremony. Directly after the ceremony is finished, Little John and the other guests follow the couple out of the church, where the entire group rush over to see a woman, Regina, injured and dying on the ground. ("Operation Mongoose Part 2")

After Third Curse

In Storybrooke's forest, Little John runs into strangers from Camelot and promptly notifies Robin Hood, who realizes they must have been brought to town by Emma's new curse. ("The Price")

After Hades' defeat by Zelena, at the cost of Robin's life, Little John attends the funeral, along with Friar Tuck and Roland, to mourn the loss of the Merry Men's leader. ("Last Rites")

That night, at Robin's wake in the diner, Little John, Friar Tuck, Roland, and Granny toast their drinks in honor of Robin, while Regina is still processing her lover's untimely death. During this, a tremor rips through Storybrooke, as a result of Mr. Gold absorbing the town's magic into the Olympian Crystal. To the shock of everyone except Emma, who wanted to break the news delicately to Regina, Hook rushes in, having been restored to life earlier by Zeus. The next morning, after Emma and Regina decide to leave town to search for Mr. Gold and the crystal, Merida leads Little John, the other Merry Men, and the Camelot natives to the heroes, in fear they can't return home because of the disappearing magic. To keep this from happening, Zelena creates a portal for them to go before Mr. Gold uses up the crystal's magic. As some of the group travel home, Little John asks Zelena about Regina, whom neither he or Roland have gotten a chance to say goodbye to. Zelena persuades him that Regina will understand, as Robin would've wanted Roland to grow up in Sherwood Forest. After Friar Tuck and Roland go into the portal, Little John bids farewell to the heroes before following them in. ("Only You")
