In 1999, Ingrid works in the childcare system for boys and girls and runs a group home in Richfield, Minnesota. A young teenager named Emma Swan is placed under Ingrid's care. Emma moves in, keeping her old video camera as well as the footage of her time with her friend Lily. Another child in the home, Kevin, grabs the camera and toys around with it as the device unknowingly begins recording them. As Emma shouts at him to give it back, her new foster mother approaches to turn it off and returns the device to Emma. Ingrid reassures Emma, who is the newest addition to the house, that she'll fit in. After Ingrid walks off to announce bedtime, Kevin blocks Emma's way and threatens her into turning over her camera to him by tomorrow or he'll make her life miserable. That night, Ingrid catches Emma attempting to run away. She doesn't stop her, but casually lets it slip that Kevin happens to be afraid of spiders; including the rubber ones hidden in her own drawer. Realizing Ingrid is helping her, the girl agrees to stay. ("Breaking Glass", "Family Business", "Shattered Sight")
Emma spends six months with Ingrid and comes to view her as the family she never had. However, one day, Ingrid, knowing the girl's potential, pulls Emma in front of an incoming car and pushes her to use magic. Instead, Emma, freaked out at Ingrid's insistence that she has hidden powers, runs away for good. ("Family Business", "Shattered Sight")
In the year 2001, Ingrid leaves her life as a foster mother behind and packs her belongings. She travels to Maine, where she opens the Sorcerer's scroll and magically materializes in Storybrooke. ("Shattered Sight")
At the sheriff's station in Storybrooke, Emma and Hook watch a camera recording of her and an old friend. Suddenly, it plays footage, which Emma doesn't remember, of herself in a new foster home as a boy toys with the camera. The foster mother, revealed to be Ingrid, approaches to take the device away. ("Breaking Glass")
- The scene where Ingrid takes Emma's video camera away from Kevin in "Shattered Sight" differs from the video recording in "Breaking Glass" and "Family Business." For example, in the recording, Ingrid says, "We respect property in this house, Emma." In the actual scene, she says, "We respect property in this household, don't we, Kevin?"
