HistoryEdit

Early LifeEdit

Henry was born in a prison in Phoenix, Arizona, and given up for adoption by his mother, Emma Swan, because she wanted to give him his best chance in life. His father is unknown and apparently knows nothing about Henry as Emma has stated in the Pilot episode. He was then found by Mr. Gold and adopted by the Mayor of Storybrooke, Maine, Regina Mills.

Henry hates growing up with Regina and was always distant from her. Regina even went so far as to put him into therapy. He was becoming lonely and depressed, so Mary Margaret Blanchard, his teacher, gives him a storybook.

Henry then realizes that the story in the book is real and all of the characters are living in his town. He finds out that he is a part of the story through his mother who is the daughter of Snow White and Prince James Charming. Henry sets off to find her in Boston and bring her back to Storybrooke.

Season OneEdit

Henry is first seen in the Pilot, on a bus carrying a thick, old-looking book. An older lady asks him if its a good book, and he replies with "It's more than just a book," leaving questions among the audience. In the next scene, he gets a ride from a taxi to Emma Swan's apartment. He rings the doorbell and asks if she gave up a baby ten years ago, and tells her he is her son.

He invites himself in, and she asks him where he lives; he tells her Storybrooke, and she decides to take him home. On the drive home, he pulls out the book and tells her that all of it is true. She doesn't believe him and tells him that she can tell when anyone is lying. She tries it on him, and she can tell he is not, and says "Just because you believe in something doesn't make it true."

When they enter Storybrooke, they meet Archie Hopper, who Henry claims is Jiminy Cricket. Archie reveals that Henry is the mayor's son. Henry tells Emma that everyone in this town is a fairy tale character under the Evil Queen's curse. Emma takes him back to his house. He is then seen sitting in his castle playhouse, talking about the book and how it is Emma's destiny to be here.

He talks about his adoption, which brings tears to Emma's eyes, as he begs for her not to go back. They hold hands as they make their way for her car. Henry is seen running into his house and up the stairs. For a few moments, he is lying down on his bed where he notices that the town clock's hands moved, after not moving since anyone can remember. Realizing that Emma decided to stay in town, Henry is overjoyed.

Henry is still grinning at the clock and is sitting on his bed in the morning when his mom walks in and asks him where the missing pages of the book are. He leaves for school before Regina can question him any more about the missing pages. He is then seen at the diner with Emma and asks her if she can walk with him to school.

They talk about Regina and her "curse" and form a plan called "Operation Cobra," and gives her the missing pages from the book. He runs off to school. He is then called out by his mom in the middle of teacher Mary Margaret's lesson to tell him Emma was arrested, and she's a "con" woman. He tells her he has got to get back to class and walks off. He bails Emma out of jail with Mary Margaret.

He is seen standing outside the door when Emma and Regina are talking in her office, and Emma indirectly calls Henry crazy. Offended, he runs away. He is with Archie, still upset, when Emma walks in and apologizes. She burns the pages of the book in the fire to keep them from Regina, and they hug. They continue with their Operation Cobra.

He is first seen reaching out to touch John Doe's face when Mary Margaret walks in. He asks her if she knows him, and they talk about if he has any family, and he asks "sure you don't know him?" and smiles. He is talking to Emma in his castle playhouse, and they talk about how they need to get Mary Margaret to read to John Doe and remind him.

He is with Emma at Granny's Diner to meet with Mary Margaret about what happened when she read to him. She tells them he woke up, and Henry thinks John Doe is remembering and brings up the idea to do it again. Mary Margaret gets up right away and insists they go now. When they get to the hospital, they see John Doe is gone. They don't know what happened.

They go over the surveillance video from last night and see him get up and walk out. Emma asks where that door leads to, and the security guard says the forest. Henry runs in the forest to help them search and tells Mary Margaret that John Doe is looking for her. They continue to look and find his hospital bracelet covered in blood. They find him unconscious in the creek. While Mary tries to resuscitate him, Emma tells Henry not to look and hugs him.

They are all in the hospital watching John Doe getting hooked up to machines, when his wife shows up, shocking them. They find out his real name is David Nolan. His mom calls him to leave and halfway, he makes an excuse to go get his backpack, where he tells Mary Margaret that he was indeed looking for her, and they belong together.

Later, Regina is going to a council meeting and tells Henry to stay put in the house. Of course, Henry waits until she is gone before leaving to find Emma. He finds her at Mary Margaret's house, talking to Mr. Gold, and says that he was still trying to figure out who Mr. Gold was.

Emma then tells Henry that Ashley Boyd was missing, and that she needed to find her. Henry ignores her orders to go home and follows her to Granny's Diner, where she proceeds to interrogate Ruby. When Ruby reveals that Ashley had two stepsisters and a stepmother, Henry quickly catches on and starts to mention Operation Cobra, but Emma shushes him before he can finish.

After Emma goes to Sean Herman's house and is told by Mitchell Herman that Ashley had agreed to sell her baby, Henry warns her that she can't make Ashley break a deal with Mr. Gold. When the duo questions Ruby again, she reveals that Ashley had already left for Boston. Emma sends Henry home, but once she is driving away to find Ashley, he pops up in the back seat.

He says that no one will be able to leave Storybrooke because of the Dark Curse, and if anyone tried, bad things would happen. Just then, Emma finds Ruby's car abandoned in a ditch. They pull over and discover Ashley, who claims that her baby was coming. Henry stands by, helpless, as Emma struggles to drag her to the car and the three drive to the hospital.

At the hospital, Henry reveals to Emma that no one could leave Storybrooke but her. This fact, he argues, reinforced his idea about Happily Ever After and that she really was the savior. After Emma saves Ashley's baby from being taken by Mr. Gold, she takes Henry home. He narrowly escapes getting caught by Regina when she gets home.

The next day, Henry is at one of his sessions with Archie Hopper. He explains to Archie how Jiminy Cricket wasn't always a cricket, and Archie humors him. Moments after, the town suffers an earthquake and a large sinkhole appears at the entrance of an abandoned mine. When Archie and Henry arrive, Regina orders Henry to go to her car and tells Archie that she would destroy him if he didn't crush her son's delusion.

At their next session, Marco comes to Archie's office in order to see his long-time friend. Henry excitedly reveals that Marco was actually Gepetto, and outlines his plans to search the mine because he was positive that the sinkhole's sudden appearance had something to do with the curse. Archie cuts him off, telling him that if he continued on with his crazy idea, people would think he was insane and would lock him up. He tells him that his nonsense must end, and Henry leaves, visibly upset.

Later, he shows up at Emma and Mary Margaret's house, crying. Emma becomes furious and confronts Archie. In the midst of their argument, Regina calls, demanding to know where Henry is. It is revealed that he had left Mary Margaret's flat and gone to the mine. Archie realizes this and hurries to the mine with Emma.

Meanwhile, Henry is exploring inside the mine. He removes a piece of decorative glass, a shard similar to the one that Regina had pocketed earlier, and the ceiling starts to collapse. Archie manages to enter the mine just before it caved in.

They find each other, and Henry starts running through the tunnels, telling the therapist to follow him. Once they become lost inside the mine, they hear Pongo's bark and follow the noise. There, they find an elevator, and start cranking it upward. After the elevator becomes stuck, Henry apologizes to the pyschiatrist for his behavior, and they have a long discussion about Happily Ever After.

Then they hear a noise, and discover that Emma has come down to save them. Archie lifts Henry up, and the elevator begins to give way. Before Emma can grab him, the elevator plummets, but they find that Archie had grabbed onto some of Emma's gear with his umbrella. All three of them are lifted to safety.

After Graham's death, Henry becomes depressed and warns Emma that they shouldn't mess with the curse. He blames himself for Graham's death and tells Emma that he was giving up on Operation Cobra. However, his faith was renewed when Emma won the position of Sheriff, fair-and-square.

A few days later, Henry is browsing in Mr. Clark's store when two children about his age walk up to him. They introduce themselves as Ava and Nicholas and ask him to hang out. Just as Henry is about to leave, Mr. Clark corners them and accuses them of shoplifting. He calls Regina who, when she arrives, is confident that Henry was framed by the two orphans. Henry later arrives at the police station and tells Emma that Ava and Nicholas were really Hansel and Gretel.

In the episode Fruit of the Poisonous Tree, Regina destroys Henry's castle, which makes him very upset. He also discovers that his storybook of fairytales has disappeared. Emma tries to expose Regina for wasting Storybrooke's stolen money on a separate house for herself in the woods; however, the house turns out to be a modern playground for all children of Storybrooke.

Regina warns the embarrassed Emma to stay away from Henry, or else she would take legal action against her. While Henry is playing on the playground with the other children, he asks if they can talk about Operation Cobra sometime. Emma, however, declines and says that his mom could keep her away from him if they tried. Henry is left watching in the woods as she drives away.

A few days later, during Mr. Gold's imprisonment for the beating of Moe French, Regina arrives at the station with Henry in order to bribe her to leave her alone with Mr. Gold for thirty minutes. He and Emma go to the ice cream parlor to get ice cream.

After that, Regina gives Henry a video game to apologize for her destroying his castle, but Henry doesn't like it. A few minutes later, Kathryn Nolan comes into Regina's office in order to speak with her, and Henry leaves. He is later seen sitting on a parkbench on the sidewalk when Emma approaches him. She gives him his storybook back, which makes him ecstatic.

Many days later, he is browsing through possible jobs for Ruby. Ruby, however, doesn't like the sound of any of them. However, she is very good at answering the telephone, which Emma sees. Emma hires Ruby as her assistant.

When David Nolan is reported in a daze in the woods, Emma is ready to go look for him when Henry cuts in. He reveals that Ruby is actually Red Riding Hood, but that she doesn't know how cool she could be. Emma heeds Henry's advice and takes Ruby with her. Ruby successfully finds David.

PersonalityEdit

Henry is bold - he will hide in Emma's car or explore a mine if he feels it is necessary. He is firm in his belief that Emma is the savior of the cursed town of Storybrooke. Henry has strong feelings and ideas about good and evil: Snow White is good, Regina is evil, and good will win. He tells Regina this. Despite the fact that Regina raised him, he is firm in his belief that she is evil, and believes her capable of anything. He seems to have no tender feelings towards Regina.

Henry cares about the welfare of others. He very much wants to the curse to be lifted from the townspeople. He was adamant in warning Emma that Ashley, Ava, and Nicholas could not leave Storybrooke - that something horrible would happen to them. After Regina killed Graham, he was worried for all the other people she might hurt.

In addition to uncursing the residents of Storybrooke, Henry seems motivated by a desire to change his own life. He says his life sucks. He tells Emma he want to be away from Regina, to live with Emma, more than anything. He references being "scarred for life" - seemingly by Regina. He particularly shows vulnerability when Emma and Archie each expresses the thought that he is crazy.

  • Enjoys hot chocolate with cinnamon, like his mother and maternal grandmother.
  • Henry is the only child that knows of the curse.
  • He was named after Regina's father and was given to Regina as a baby by Mr. Gold.
  • Henry left Storybrooke briefly to find Emma. (In the Pilot.)
  • Henry means "House of Rulers", which is fitting, since his fairy tale family have royal blood in them; Mills sounds similar to the prefix "Mal", which is Latin for "evil" which's the true nature of his adoptive mother Regina.
  • A close look at Henry's bedroom reveals he has, in total, 18 clocks.
  • Is willing to do anything to prove to Emma that the curse is real, even eating Regina's posion-apple pastry.
  • Has only been absent from one episode.

  • Does anyone else feel like he tends to dress kind of like David? T-shirt type thing with a plaid-type thing over it? Often with a dark-colored coat that looks like a more boy-ish version of Mary Margaret's blue or white coats?

  • Wouldnt Henry be Snow Whites brother since Queen Regina is Snow Whites step-mom and he is Regina's adoptive son.

    • Technically, yes, but Henry is also Snow/Mary Margaret's grandson since Emma is her daughter. That'd be just as complicated as saying Regina is Emma's step grandmother since she's Snow/MM's stepmother. And that'd also make Regina James/David's stepmother-in-law, lol.

  • The writers of Once Upon A Time need to expand their storylines more when they represent a situation. My question is how does Henry know that everyone in Storybrooke is a Fairytale character?

    • They haven't expanded on that yet. Be patient.

    • It's through the book, but that's supposed to be explained during Season 2.

    • It is through the book and it might have something to do with him:

      a) being a kid

      b) being related to the characters in the book so he can understand it

I think it is combo of both.

    • I think its because Henry aged unlike everyone else in Storybrooke. So he probably started wondering "Why are none of my classmates going into the next grade." Then when he got the storybook and saw how the townspeople looked like the people in the book and figured out that they were the same people.

  • I just can't get over those 18 clocks! And I like those paper lantern things.

  • I don't think Regina really loves him. I think she believes she loves him, but to me it seems like she just wants him as a method to fill the lonely hole in her heart, and isn't interested in him personally. I can see the perspectives of those who think that Regina really does love him, and I can see arguments for that, but personally that just doesn't sound right to me.

    • I believe Lana herself already stated that yes, Regina does love Henry; you don't adopt a child a birth mother doesn't want, care for them for ten years and fight tooth and nail to keep them with you if you don't really love them and aren't interested in them personally.

    • I think Regina loves Henry the best she can. Her love isn't perfect. I believe he is prevented from seeing that her love is genuine because he just sees her as the evil queen who tried to kill snow white and make everyone unhappy.

  • Well, she's still the one who adopted Henry, loved and cared for him for ten years, not someone else, so that's a moot point. And weather Henry believes it or not, Regina does love him, which is why she fought for him. She is the one who's hurting most because the only thing worse then losing a happy ending and not remembering is having no happy ending to begin with and knowing it.

  • He should care about his foster mother and be grateful because she adopted him when Emma intended to never have anything to do with him again, changed every diaper, soothed every fever and endured every tantrum for ten years, but clearly ten years of love and care mean nothing to him. And if he did have a broad view he would see that things aren't always as simple as black and white, good and evil, and that Regina is probably the one hurting most of all.

    • Yeah, and if she hadn't adopted him someone else would have, most likely. And he plainly dose *not* believe she loves him.

Regina is not the one hurting most of all - her victims are. The ones that are still alive to hurt, that is. She deliberately keeps people miserable and takes joy in the misery of others.

It really is black and white, IMO.

  • Sorry, but in my view he is a spoiled, ungrateful brat. If he had a broader view, shown some love and appreciation for Regina and maybe just a bit of conflict over helping to destroy his own foster mother who loved and cared for him for ten years, instead of hating her, dismissing her as "evil" and constantly rubbing his love for his "savior" birth mother in her face, I might have felt differently.

    • Why should he care abuot her? Why should he be grateful? She's an evil murderer who was trying to make him think he was crazy and sabotaging his other relationships.

He *did* take the broader view - how she treated other people, rather than just how she treated him, what was important. The narrower view would have enjoyed pampered princehood and said to hell with everyone else.

  • I never liked Henry. Personally, I found him an annoying, ungrateful, spoiled brat.

    • oh shut up! he's not spoiled he's bold! all he's done is try to get emma to believe to which she finally does! in what way does he act spoiled and ungrateful?! the only time i've seen him come close to that is when he's around regina and you cant really blame him for that! dont make henry out like a bad person

  • So is Henry's last name going to be changed to Swan?

  • I keep on thinking that I'm going to see Jack Shepard from Lost as one of the doctors in the season finale.

  • When Emma insisted on leaving and Henry realized she didn't believe him about the curse, his reaction to realizing that she had actually been lying to him all along was just heartbreaking.

She says she's trying to help him, but the worst thing she can do for him is not believe in the curse...

  • This is a fairytale, isn't it? so people are either good or bad (although both can make mistakes), and the queen is bad, and henry is good. And good doesn't like bad. Let's not forget what the Evil Queen did to her beloved horse and also to her beloved Father, she killed them. I can see things getting to the point that Regina will have to kill Henry in order to gain more power. Not that she wants to (or will be able to), she loves him. But magic always takes something back and in the case of the curse, it's love. Love isn't a possibility for her.

    • She loves Henry because he is reminscent of his father...Daniel is the one she loves most...she would take as far as she could to tkae a revenge...she loves her horse, her father and Daniel but there is a ranking. She doesn't want to just because she thinks she can never be weak and innocent..she thinks she must be cruel so that she can protect herself or people she truly love....this is partially made by her mother....

In this Tv drama...the boundary between the good and the evil is not always that clear as this is an adult drama...

remember Snow White has a relationship with the doctor? this will not happen in fairytales but will actually happen in the real world! The stories of the fairytales are extended and people have 3-dimensional personalities... like Snow White is not so weak although she is kind but she will fight to protect herself....the drama is only about antasy any more...it is about real human beings...

  • henry's dad is the guy at the orphanage that told august that they had money to get out there. hahaha

  • Imagine being a grandmother, not knowing that you are a grandmother, not knowing that you are even a mother, being about 30 for 28 years, and not knowing that!

  • I think its funny how Henry just does what he wants. Oh btw, i'm NOT switching classes. lol Regina got told by her own son.

  • Is there at least a little chance that Henry (Emma's son) Regina's father?

    • Did you smoke a banana laced with antipsychotics? WTF r u thinking???

    • No, no chance at all. Are we watching the same show?

    • Well, the show is about a place called Fariytale land - I guess it's always possible that they writers could decide to make Emma's child a reincarnation of Regina's father, but why would they? ... just for the irony?

    • No...Just trust me, no.

  • OMG! I can not believe henry ate the turnover made from regina which had the poisoned apple. It was supposed to given to emma to eat. Henry said if you do not believe in the curse, you believe in me. Then he eats it and falls like what snow white did. What is coming up in the next episode the season finale?

  • He really sincerely cares about all these peoples' happiness no matter what it costs him! He is a real hero to me.

  • I really hate that a TON of people seem to really hate Henry, and a bunch of critics are really ahrsh on Jared's acting. As far as child actors go, he's nowhere near the worst. As for the character, yeah, he's a bit annoying with some of his stating the obvious stuff, but he's the chracter that reminds everyone that this is all real, that the curse exists etc. That, and as far as 10 year olds go, he's not that annoying at all. It kind of saddens me his appearances have gone down so drastically as the series progresses, but I don't think that means he's not important. Apart from Emma and Regina, he's arguably the most important person on the show. They just had to cut him out to introduce new characters and give others a chance for screen time. When all the cards are down, I think he'll have a much larger role to play.

    • I think he's a perfectly fine actor, I think he is very believable in his role of a child trying to make an adult believe the unbelievable. Also he grew up in secluded Storybrooke, he is not going to act like a 'city" kid , who would never believe infairytales. Henry is vital to the show , he won't die...

    • I agree, Henry really is important, they need him to help keep Emma and the story focused on the curse. I really hope he doesn't die!

  • And if his name is Henry Daniel?

    by PSalf
  • Henry is his Grandmother's child. He sacrificed himself for others and Snow did for Charming. He has to have a heart, this is all about having "heart"- ( bravery . love all things good)

  • I KNEW HE WAS GONNA EAT THE TURNOVER I KNEW IT I KNEW IT!!!! I'm so sad :(

  • Henry is hospitalize because of the apple. Does that mean true loves first kiss will wake him up? Or will breaking the Dark Curse also break Henry from the Sleeping Curse?

  • I just had a scary idea...What if what she keeps in her silver box on her desk is Henry's heart? Maybe she took it when he was a baby, when she first got him, and that could be what Henry meant when he made a reference to being scarred for life? Because later he found out about it? She used to keep her favorite horse's heart in that box, but she doesn't have the horse heart anymore, and Henry is her favorite person who she has control over, so this makes sense to me.

    • "She" as in Regina.

    • wouldnt he be more obident towards her then? he doesnt seem to be afraid to stand up to her especially from last week's episode. i will admit though that i get the feeling that someting must be in that box thats important.

    • Good point...Maybe she doesn't want to hurt him but just keep him with her? But again that wouldn't explain why she never gave it a squeeze when he ran away...
