I was a mouse. My name was Gus. I lived in Cinderella's pantry, I ate cheese, I gnawed on wood, but I preferred the cheese.

Billy to Ruby src

Gus, currently known as Billy, is a character on ABC's Once Upon a Time. He débuts in the fourth episode of the first season and is portrayed by co-star Jarod Joseph.

Gus is based on one of the mice from Charles Perrault's version of the fairytale "Cinderella", and on the character of the same name from the Disney film Cinderella. He also takes the place of one of the rats from Perrault's fairytale.

History

Before First Curse

Gus is a mouse who lives in the Tremaine Estate in the Enchanted Forest, identifiable by his surprisingly high intelligence and clothing in the form of a yellow shirt and green cap. He becomes a companion to Ella, and comforts her after her wicked stepfamily throws her deceased mother's dress into a fire. When Ella discovers a key in the pocket of one of the dresses, she relays to Gus the story her mother told her of the key's magic powers, which could turn any door into a portal to the Land of Untold Stories. Shrugging it off as silly, since magic doesn't exist, Ella drops the key into a box. ("The Other Shoe")

Later, after Rumplestiltskin makes a deal with Ella to use magic to give her an outfit for the ball, he also transforms Gus into a human. Gus escorts Ella to the ball, but he becomes distracted when a waiter walks by with a tray of cheese. Ella allows him to be excused, to which Gus takes off to get some cheese. During the ball, Ella catches the eye of Prince Thomas, but she departs after her stepmother, Lady Tremaine, convinces her that the prince is not serious about her. ("The Price of Gold", "The Other Shoe")

The spell wears off, which changes Gus back to mouse form. Now having had magic's existence proven to them, he reminds a heartbroken Ella of the key, and she decides to test it on the wardrobe. Before she can leap through, however, she is stopped by her stepsister Clorinda. Ella is later locked in a room by Lady Tremaine, and this keeps her from meeting Thomas when he comes looking for her. To help reunite the lovers, Gus squeezes himself under a door crack and runs to the carriage, where he attracts Snow White's attention. He tells her where Ella is, which allows Thomas to finally find her. ("The Other Shoe")

During First Curse

After the casting of the Dark Curse, Gus is turned into a human and becomes known as Billy, one of Storybrooke's resident mechanics. He helps to fix the truck of town visitor, Kurt Flynn, when it needs repair. The mayor, Regina, hopes to have Kurt and his son, Owen, out of town quickly, so instead of the car being fixed by in two weeks time; it will be fixed within a week. By then, Regina has grown attached to Owen, and doesn't want the father and son duo to leave. She personally asks Billy to stall the repair as she needs them to be in town for a bit longer, but he notifies her it can't be done as Kurt already came to pick up his car. Regina is horrified, and asks how long ago that was. Billy replies it was ten minutes ago. In a rush, Regina sets off to stop them from leaving town. ("Child of the Moon," "Welcome to Storybrooke")

Billy helps fixes Ruby's car when it breaks down, and while he works, she actively flirts with him. The car is given to Ruby's friend, Ashley, to help her leave town. ("The Price of Gold")

When Archie and Henry become trapped in a collapsing mine, he is called in to help assist in removing the rubble blocking the mine entrance. A sudden quake interrupts his work. Later, Archie's dog Pongo sniffs out where Henry and his trapped owner are located. Emma lifts them to safety while Billy and the rest of the townspeople applaud the successful mission. After the mine rescue, Billy and Ruby hang out and chat. ("That Still Small Voice")

On Valentine's Day, Billy enjoys the night at The Rabbit Hole.[1] ("Skin Deep")

After Mary Margaret's release from jail after the Kathryn Nolan murder charge is dropped, a party is thrown in her loft to welcome her back. Billy, along with many other residents of town, attend the celebration. ("The Return")

After First Curse
After Emma breaks the Dark Curse and the town begins to settle down, Billy approaches Ruby and explains he is actually Gus, one of the mice who lived in Cinderella's pantry. He invites her to go out with him so they can reacquaint themselves as their fairytale selves. Ruby shyly turns him down, and Belle walks over to bail her out of the situation. The next morning, Billy is found with his body dismembered in half, and Ruby is suspected as the killer. Temporary sheriff David and Granny believe in Ruby's innocence despite that District Attorney Albert Spencer is rallying the other townspeople for her arrest and imprisonment. Eventually, they find in Spencer's car a bloody ax and Ruby's missing cloak. Spencer committed a murder as a deliberate act to force David into the position of defending the supposed killer, Ruby, rather than protecting the townspeople. ("Child of the Moon")
