The Glass Coffin is an item featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It first appears in the first episode of the first season.
The glass coffin is based on the item of the same name from the fairytale "Snow White", and the Disney film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
History
The coffin is built by the seven dwarves for Snow White to be placed in after her "death" at the Evil Queen's hands. After they set the coffin in the woods and are paying their respects, Prince Charming rides up. The dwarves take off the coffin cover to allow Charming to give a final farewell to the princess, with him kissing her goodbye. This kiss of true love breaks the curse on Snow White, and she awakens moments later in the coffin, exclaiming that Charming kept his promise about finding her. ("Pilot," "A Land Without Magic," "Lost Girl")
While Storybrooke is still under the Dark Curse's influence, Regina places the coffin in a cave under the clock tower and keeps a trigger hidden inside it. Because the trigger can be used to erase the town of Storybrooke and its inhabitants, she does not want it falling into the wrong hands and has a great beast guard the cave from intruders. ("The Evil Queen")
One day, the mines collapse, with Regina finding a piece of glass from the coffin lid near the entrance to the mines. She picks it up and pockets it, which Henry notices, causing him to suspect there is something in the mines that can prove the curse is real. As the boy is exploring the collapsed tunnels, he finds another piece of glass, but doesn't know where it came from. Later that night, Regina throws the piece of glass down the mine shaft, where it lands on the rest of Snow White's glass coffin, which has several holes in it. ("That Still Small Voice")
Months later, Emma is sent to recover a true love potion, which is hidden inside a beast in the mines. As she explores the rocky tunnels, she finds her mother's glass coffin, which is now full of dust. ("A Land Without Magic")
Wishing to destroy the town inhabitants by setting off the trigger, Regina and Hook journey down to the cave to retrieve it. Once they arrive at the location, Regina deliberately pushes Hook into the pit, where he faces the beast, while Regina goes to collect the trigger from the coffin. ("The Evil Queen")
To separate Snow and David from each other forever, the Evil Queen places a sleeping curse on their hearts. After Snow goes into a deep sleep, she is transported to the forest, where her body lies in the glass coffin. The lid is pulled off so David can give her true love's kiss, and like the first time so many years ago, Snow is freed from the curse and awakens. However, since the curse dictates only one of them can be awake at any given time, David suddenly collapses unconscious. Snow sits up in the coffin, alarmed at her husband's state, and later discovers the reason for it. ("Heartless")
Trivia
On-Screen Notes
- Much like Snow White, Daniel is placed in a glass coffin after his death, as is the Red Queen. ("The Doctor," "To Catch a Thief")
Production Notes
- The glass coffin was carved out of a log that Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz found in the forest.[1]
