And yet, it wasn’t the quill itself, but the ink that captured the Dark One – harvested from the rarest species of squid, from the bottom of a bottomless ocean.
Mr. Gold to Henry Mills src

Giant Squids are a creature species featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. They are native to the Enchanted Forest and Neverland, and first appear in the fourth episode of the third season.

Giant Squids are based on the creature of the same name from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and the Disney film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Biology

As their name indicates, Giant Squids are huge sea creatures. According to Mr. Gold, they are the rarest species of squid. They can be called using conch shells. ("Into the Deep", "Nasty Habits")

Giant Squids are able to produce an ink which can temporarily paralyze any magical being. ("Into the Deep", "Birth")

History

After First Curse

While in Neverland trying to rescue Henry from Peter Pan, Neal summons a giant squid by sounding a conch shell. When the squid surfaces from a lake, he kills it with a spear, before allowing Mr. Gold to extract ink from the creature's corpse, which they'll use to paralyze Pan. ("Nasty Habits")
