Neal: My father enchanted objects so that what might be a useless piece of wood in the hands of a looter would be magical in his.
Mulan: Or in the hands of his only son.
Neal: He called it "blood magic".

Blood Magic is a type of magic featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It first appears in the first episode of the third season.

Blood Magic is linked to a person's bloodline and can be used in spells for hiding items from those who aren't of the caster's bloodline. The same method can be used to seal areas, locations or objects. ("The Heart of the Truest Believer", "Witch Hunt", "Sisters")

It can also be used to track someone linked to a person's bloodline, through use of the tracker's blood, with an item that provides insight geographically such as the Magic Globe or an ordinary map. ("In the Name of the Brother", "And Straight On 'Til Morning", "Only You")

Production Notes

  • The part where blood is used to track someone in "Only You" was originally an idea that writer Andrew Chambliss had for an episode of The Vampire Diaries, which he was a writer of. However, it never made it in that form. Since then, he'd wanted to use that element for years, so when Regina needed a way to track Henry, he realized that his old idea would work.[1]
