The Blanchard Loft is a Storybrooke location featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It first appears in the second episode of the first season.

History

During First Curse

One morning in October 2011, Mary Margaret finds a fairytale book in her apartment while cleaning out her closet. Not knowing its origin, she takes it to school and gives it to one of her students, a lonely boy named Henry, to inspire hope in his life. ("Going Home")

A few weeks later, Henry's birth mother, Emma, comes to town. After being falsely arrested and bailed out by Mary Margaret, she drops by the woman's apartment to pay her back in money. Mary Margaret invites her in, and they talk over cinnamon hot chocolate and cookies. Emma asks why Mary Margaret trusts her. Mary Margaret feels like they have met before and believes she is innocent of the charges. However, Emma wants to leave Storybrooke to keep Henry from being hurt. Mary Margaret points out that the fact that Emma wants to leave is the very reason to stay because she cares about Henry and there'll be no one else to protect him. ("The Thing You Love Most")

During one night, Mary Margaret is at the diner chatting with her date, Dr. Whale, who is busy admiring the waitress, Ruby. When she realizes it isn't going well, Mary Margaret leaves and notices Emma staying in her car because there are no vacant rooms for rent. Pleased that she is staying in town for Henry's sake, Mary Margaret offers her a spare room in the apartment, but the blonde rejects the offer; citing herself as not the roommate type. Two nights later, while Mary Margaret is home, Emma arrives at the door and accepts the prior invitation to be roommates. ("Snow Falls")

Mr. Gold, robbed of a contract signed by a pregnant Ashley, who promised to give up her child to him at birth, seeks Emma's help to track her down. He shows up at the apartment to give Emma a photo of Ashley leaving his pawnshop the previous night after she stole the contract. Emma wonders why he didn't go to the police, and Mr. Gold insists doing so would only ruin Ashley's life. Mr. Gold persuades to help him because he doesn't wish to see Ashley's child born in jail. Emma agrees to take on the assignment just as Henry bursts in. After Mr. Gold departs, Henry questions Emma about the man's unknown fairytale counterpart. ("The Price of Gold")

Under Regina's pressure, Dr. Archie Hopper tells Henry that his nonsense about the curse must end. The boy leaves the therapy session visibly upset and goes straight to Emma's apartment, in tears. Emma comforts him and then drops him back home. Nonetheless, Henry is unable to give up on his idea, and ventures into the mines to search for proof that the curse is real. ("That Still Small Voice")

While washing the dishes, Mary Margaret talks to Emma about her feelings for David, who is married. She is focused on what he said about choosing her, and not his wife, Kathryn. Emma ushers her to stop cleaning and the two sit down to have a drink. She advises Mary Margaret against getting involved with a married man and to allow David to figure out his life. ("The Shepherd")

The night after discovering Sheriff Graham's illicit relationship with Regina, Emma reacts with scorn when she sees a vase of delivered flowers sitting on the apartment counter. Believing they are from Graham, she hastily dumps them into the trash. Mary Margaret guiltily admits the flowers are for her from Dr. Whale since they had a one-night stand. Emma sees nothing wrong with one-night stands as they are something she has experience with as well. Mary Margaret then hints Emma has deeper feelings for Graham than she is aware of, especially given her strong reaction to the flowers when she thought they were from Graham. ("The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter")

Following Graham's untimely death, Emma is fired from the sheriff station, on Regina's orders. Furious, she takes out her anger on a broken toaster in the apartment. Mr. Gold drops by, having heard of what Regina did, and gives her the town charter to keep Sidney from being named the new town sheriff since it is against the rules for a mayor to appoint a job. Mr. Gold later provokes a fire in the town hall so that Emma saves Regina and shows herself as a hero, gaining the townspeople's sympathy. Even though Emma reveals the plan, she outvotes candidate Sidney and becomes sheriff. Later that day, Mr. Gold comes to visit Emma and tells her it was all an act. He had to give her a higher form of bravery, the people had to see her defy him. He tells her by standing up to him the people feel she could stand up to Regina. Emma asks why he did it. Mr. Gold says it's because they made a deal a while ago and that she owes him a favor. Now that she is sheriff, he is sure that she can find a way to repay him. ("Desperate Souls")

Emma takes in sibling orphans, Ava and Nicholas Zimmer, when they are left without parental supervision. In a discussion with Mary Margaret, she admits no one knew the children became orphans; with their mother, Dory, dead and no record of a father. Emma purposely did not report them to the government because the system will throw the siblings into homes where foster parents are paid to keep them. Overhearing them, Ava begs not to be separated from her brother. In an attempt to track down their biological father, Emma is given an antique compass Ava and Nicholas' mother owned, which leads her to Michael who used to be involved with Dory. Michael refuses to acknowledge the children as his own, but Emma is able to convince him otherwise. During the evening, Emma tells Mary Margaret about Henry's theory that she is her mother, which the schoolteacher finds amusing. When alone, Mary Margaret notices Emma's baby blanket, her room mate's sole token of her birth parents. Strangely, she seems to recognize it. ("True North")

Still pining for David, Mary Margaret wakes up in a rush and hastily leaves the apartment to be at the diner by seven-fifteen so she can catch a glimpse of him. However, the schoolteacher tells Emma she is helping her students make a volcano for a science fair project. ("7:15 A.M.")

At the apartment, Sidney, who is beginning to stand up to Regina, helps Emma pore over boxes of records, as part of an investigation on a suspicious transaction between the mayor and Mr. Gold. ("Fruit of the Poisonous Tree")

Kathryn finds out about Mary Margaret and David's affair, and the scandal causes everyone to gossip and shun her. Emma finds an upset Mary Margaret laying in bed and keeps her company. ("What Happened to Frederick")

One day, after a fight with her grandmother, Ruby decides to leave town, but Emma and Mary Margaret persuade her to stay in the apartment while she can figure things out. Eventually, Ruby and Granny reconcile. ("Red-Handed")

While Henry is helping Emma look around for evidence about Kathryn's disappearance, he takes keys from Regina's office; all of which can open any door in Storybrooke. Emma tries one of the keys on Mary Margaret's door, which successfully opens; much to her surprise. ("Heart of Darkness")

After Kathryn is found alive, the murder charge is dropped and Mary Margaret is released. A party is thrown in her apartment as a homecoming celebration. Many residents of town attend; among them August, Billy, Bashful, Dr. Whale, Happy and Mr. Clark. Having previously helped August break into Mr. Gold's pawnshop, the boy asks if he was able to find "it." Although his search was unsuccessful, August believes "it" will find him. David shows up at the door, but Mary Margaret signals for Emma to turn him away. Suspicious of Mr. Gold and his connection to Kathryn's kidnapping, Emma grills him on the subject, but he avoids discussing it and instead asks about August. ("The Return")

In Mary Margaret's apartment, August installs a new lock on the door to keep Regina out so she cannot use keys to enter and frame her for a crime. Emma announces her intention of hiring Mr. Gold to build a case against Regina. ("The Stranger")

One morning, Mary Margaret realizes Emma has disappeared from the apartment. When Emma finally does return, she admits to attempting to run out of town with Henry. Seeing as this failed, she tries to seek permanent custody of Henry, but the chances are slim. Out of options, Emma concludes it is best to leave the town alone and allow Henry to be raised by Regina. While Emma is packing up her things in the apartment, Henry arrives, to which she uses the time to tell him of her plans to leave Storybrooke because she believes she is a bad influence on him and he is better off being raised by Regina. As they hug, the boy sees an apple turnover on the counter, which Regina gifted to Emma as a parting gift. Henry insists the food is poisoned and takes a bite of it to prove himself right, and to convince her magic is real. To Emma's shock, he faints after eating the apple turnover. ("An Apple Red as Blood")

After First Curse

After Emma and Mary Margaret disappear through a magic hat to another realm, David takes Henry to the apartment with him. There, a dejected Henry gazes at a photo of the two women. David reassures him that they are alive, and he will find them. ("Broken")

In front of a mirror, David tries to rehearse a speech to the people of Storybrooke to address the crisis and concern of their imprisoned situation in Storybrooke, but finds it difficult to find the right words to say ("We Are Both")

On David's way home to the loft, he meets Henry, who is in the yellow bug, and shows him a pair of wooden swords so they can practice fighting. ("Lady of the Lake")

Mr. Gold goes to the apartment and enlists the help of David to find a missing Belle, since the people of Storybrooke are less than willing to help the man who has caused such misery. ("The Crocodile")

In the apartment, a screaming Henry wakes up; causing David to come running. David lights a candle for Henry, and then the boy describes having a nightmare in which he was in a room of fire with another person present. David comforts him and says it was just a bad dream. ("Tallahassee")

Anxious about her Henry's nightmares, Regina invites Mr. Gold into the apartment, where Henry displays a burn on his hand that he got from being in the room of fire. Mr. Gold chides Regina for not being knowledgeable about the side effects of her own sleeping curse, to which Regina admits she didn't think about what happened to her victims after they woke up but she cares now since it concerns Henry's well-being. Mr. Gold then explains a person's soul travels to the Netherworld while under the sleeping curse and that those who awaken from the curse will go to the same place in their dreams. On the table, he extracts liquid into a dropper and drips it into a necklace. Regina demands a way to prevent Henry from going to the Netherworld, but instead, Mr. Gold states that it is impossible and gifts Henry the necklace so he can be in control of his own actions in the Netherworld. Regina wonders what Mr. Gold wants in return as his deals are never free, however, Mr. Gold believes she wouldn't be able to afford it for this house call and decides not to charge anything. Later that night, Ruby is in the apartment as she looks to David as he watches over a sleeping Henry. David tells her that Henry may never see Emma or Mary Margaret ever again and his uncertainty about how to break the news to him. Ruby insists he won't have to, but David remains skeptical since fairy dust won't be enough and now Jefferson's hat is gone. She believes in him because she knows he never gives up until he succeeds, in addition to the fact he won't be doing it alone. On Ruby's way out, she asks him to phone Granny so someone can unchain Belle from the library and then uses up the remaining wolfstime hours to run through the woods in wolf form. While Henry's body stays in the apartment as he is asleep, he travels to the Netherworld and uses the necklace to weaken the flames in the room. ("Child of the Moon")

During another venture to the Netherworld, Henry learns from the other person trapped there, a woman named Aurora, that she is with Emma and Mary Margaret in the Enchanted Forest. After Aurora tells him what he needs to do to save them, Henry wakes up in the apartment bed with a gasp. Regina and David, who both dozed off near Henry's bed, are startled awake when the boy excitedly announces Emma and Mary Margaret are alive. Henry explains that Aurora told him they have a way home but they require help with someone who only Mr. Gold knows how to defeat: Regina's mother. ("Into the Deep")

Having safely returned to Storybrooke, Mary Margaret makes up for lost time with David. While the two are still in bed, Emma and Henry arrive home after going out shopping for groceries. Henry is unfazed and simply asks why they are still in bed. On the other hand, Emma is shocked at finding her parents in this kind of situation and awkwardly excuses herself to the kitchen to make tacos. David jokes to Mary Margaret that he is glad they are still able to give Emma some embarrassing childhood memories even though they have been absent from most of her life. ("The Cricket Game")

Seemingly finding proof that Regina is responsible for killing Archie, Emma breaks the news to Henry. Following the funeral ceremony, everyone returns to the apartment for a quiet wake. Emma attempts to offer Henry some food, but he is too depressed to eat. Soon, Leroy speaks out, on behalf of the dwarves, to inquire about when they can return home to the Enchanted Forest. Emma remarks that she and Mary Margaret worked hard in order to come back to Storybrooke, but Leroy is concerned that Regina is still out there somewhere. Additionally, he points out how dangerous it is for outsiders to wander into their town and discover magic. Ruby agrees; stating even people from the Enchanted Forest were frightened by her wolf form and perhaps people in this world will likely react the same. Emma believes the town is safe for now, though Leroy believes sooner or later something will happen. After the wake, Marco agrees to give Archie's dog, Pongo, to Henry to help the boy deal with his sadness. As a more enthusiastic Henry takes the dog outside to clean him, Mary Margaret suggests, to David and Emma's shock, that she and her husband should move into another house since things are getting too cramped. While the couple is out house-hunting, an alive Archie shows up to the apartment. To Emma and Henry, he states Regina's mother Cora kidnapped and faked his death. "The Outsider")

During a hectic night at the hospital, Emma deals with an outsider, Greg, who crashed his car into town just as Mr. Gold used magic. To the relief of many people, Greg claims he was texting when the vehicle spun out of control and did not witness anything strange. Returning home to the apartment, Emma and her parents fill Henry in on what happened. When they reveal Dr. Whale's counterpart is Dr. Frankenstein, Henry realizes this particular story doesn't exist in his book. He theorizes that the curse must have gone to other worlds and taken people from other stories. Suddenly, Mr. Gold arrives demanding Emma fulfill her long-standing favor to him by helping to find his son in New York. He threatens that if Belle is harmed in his absence, they will pay with their lives. ("In the Name of the Brother")

Knowing how dangerous Cora is, Emma decides to bring Henry with her for the trip to New York. After they both leave with Mr. Gold, David and Mary Margaret prepare to search for Cora, when Regina arrives, once again denying killing Archie. They apologize for suspecting her and confess that he is alive. Upon learning Henry left town with Emma, Regina is upset no one notified her. Mary Margaret insists they don't need to run anything by her, which Regina half-heartedly agrees with. ("Tiny")

Receiving a hysterical phone call from Emma, Mary Margaret learns Mr. Gold's son, Neal, is also Henry's biological father. She councils her daughter into telling Henry the truth, but Emma worries he will get hurt. However, Mary Margaret wonders if it's Emma who is afraid of getting hurt. Later, she relays the news to David, who can't believe the complexity of their family tree. He jokes that it's a good thing they didn't have Thanksgiving in the Enchanted Forest or else the holidays would've been terrible. On second thought, Mary Margaret suggests that everyone's new-found familial connection will bring them all together. ("Manhattan")

On Mary Margaret's birthday, she specifically asks David not to do anything special. Though it should be a day of celebration, Mary Margaret remembers her mother dying on the same date. That morning, David finds a present left outside the apartment door. When Mary Margaret notices the box on the table, she accosts him over getting her a gift, but he explains how he found it. Reluctantly, she opens it to find a tiara given to her by her mother years ago. The couple looks on in amazement; realizing that the tiara was not lost in the curse as they had thought. Upon opening the card that came along with the tiara, she finds out Johanna sent the present. In a rush, Mary Margaret leaves to find her. ("The Queen Is Dead")

Mary Margaret, shouldering guilt from tricking Regina into killing Cora, becomes despondent and bed-ridden. Eventually, when Henry inquiries, Emma admits what happened. Cautioned by Mr. Gold, they learn of Regina's plans to rip out Mary Margaret's heart and sacrifice it for the curse of the empty-hearted, which she intends to cast on Henry to gain his love. Since Mary Margaret did save his life, Mr. Gold guards her while David and Emma are away from the apartment. Though Regina successfully breaks in, he is there to stop her from taking out Mary Margaret's heart. Later, Mr. Gold is informed, via a phone call, that Regina has given up on enacting the curse. Quietly, Mary Margaret asks how he can live with himself after all the evil he has committed. Mr. Gold states that it is best to keep telling oneself the right thing was done until one truly believed in it. Unable to see past her own actions, she secretly goes to Regina and asks to be killed as punishment. Instead, Regina only shows Mary Margaret the growing blackened spot in her heart. ("Welcome to Storybrooke")

David continues to coddle a recuperating Mary Margaret with breakfast in bed, but Emma firmly believes it's time for her to simply move on. Once Emma and Henry leave to meet Neal and his fiancée, Tamara, Mary Margaret gets up to begin packing things for a trip to the woods. She asks him to let her go alone and think things through, which he allows. Later, Emma apologizes to Henry for lying to him about his father. The two embrace and head upstairs; leaving David and his wife downstairs. She confesses going to Regina and being shown the darkness in her own heart, which upsets David. Admittedly, Mary Margaret kept it a secret as she wanted to find a way to stop her blackening heart. David promises they will because he believes in the goodness in her heart. ("Selfless, Brave and True")

During the day, Henry and Neal spend their time playing in the park. In the evening, Neal brings a worn out and asleep Henry back to the apartment. Emma tucks her son into bed and then the two sit down to talk. Previously, Emma was told by her parents that they wish to return to the Enchanted Forest using magic beans. With this still on her mind, she asks Neal if he would ever return to his old home if given the chance. Neal states he spent a lifetime trying to escape. ("Lacey")

Kidnapped and tortured by Greg, Regina is rescued and brought back to the apartment by David and Mary Margaret. With Mother Superior's magic wand, she is restored to full health. Once awake, Regina lets it slip that she wanted to destroy everyone with a trigger and then whisk Henry away with her to the Enchanted Forest. However, the trigger is now in Greg and Tamara's hands. Shortly after, Emma arrives home to reveal that Neal, shot by Tamara, fell into a portal. As she grieves his death, her parents comfort her. Desperate to stop the trigger, David and Mary Margaret ask Mr. Gold for help, but he refuses. After fetching Henry, they and Emma regroup at the apartment with Regina. An earthquake rips through town; signaling the activation of the trigger. Hook, previously aligned with Greg and Tamara, offers to help them. ("Second Star to the Right," "And Straight On 'Til Morning")

During Second Curse

A new curse is cast causing all the former town residents who were sent to the Enchanted Forest for a year, after Regina undid Pan's curse, to return to their lives in Storybrooke. With Hook's help, Emma reclaims memories of her parents and friends. She arrives on the doorstep of the apartment to reunite with David and a visibly pregnant Mary Margaret. Emma is brought up to speed on how they mysteriously don't remember anything from their year in the Enchanted Forest because of the new curse. She decides to team up with Regina to sleuth out the caster of the curse, who escapes without capture. Notably, some town residents have been disappearing, which culminates in the discovery that they are turning into flying monkeys. This serves as evidence to help David, Emma, Hook, Mary Margaret, and Regina to conclude the caster of the curse is the Wicked Witch of the West. ("New York City Serenade," "Witch Hunt")

Mary Margaret has her first get-together with a midwife, Zelena, she intends to hire and introduces David to her. Zelena, whose main objective is to obtain Mary Margaret's child, brews them tea and deliberately slips a magical hallucinogenic herb called night root into David's cup. Once David leaves, Mary Margaret and Zelena carry on with the conversation. During this time period, David's consumption of the night root causes his greatest fear to manifest as a version of himself but he defeats the illusion by piercing it with his sword. As Zelena is getting ready to leave the apartment, she checks her bag to see David's sword, which became imbued with David's courage after he destroyed the illusion, is now in her possession. ("The Tower")

While everyone else is looking for the Wicked Witch, Mary Margaret returns to the apartment to get some rest. Unable to feel the baby moving, she panics and calls Zelena for help. The dutiful midwife rushes over and explains it's normal for the child to move infrequently as the due date approaches. She then offers the expecting mother a glass of orange juice. After downing all of it, Mary Margaret surprisingly feels a kick from the baby. Later, Zelena excuses herself to the restroom and disappears out of the apartment through the window. David and Emma burst in to apprehend Zelena after discovering her true identity as the Wicked Witch, but are too late to catch her. ("Quiet Minds")

Emma assists David in putting together a baby's crib while Regina puts a protective spell around the apartment to keep Zelena out. She agrees to strengthen her magic under Regina's instruction, to which David and Mary Margaret suggest they can keep watch over Henry for the day. Awkwardly, Emma tells her parents that Henry perceives them to be boring people, and instead lets Hook take care of her son. At the end of the day, they regroup at the apartment. Hook returns without Henry since he spent the day helping Ariel track down a missing Eric and had allowed Emma's parents to take the boy for a driving lesson. In another magic test, Emma successfully projects a mirror image of Ariel and Eric happily reunited on Hangman's Island in the Enchanted Forest. Before Hook leaves, Emma affirms she is tired of looking into the past and no longer cares about what he is hiding from her. ("The Jolly Roger")

Regina figures out the key to break the curse and getting everyone's memories back is having Henry believe in magic. When Emma recalls believing in magic because of Henry's storybook, Mary Margaret suggests looking for the item in the first place it appeared to her in 2011; her closet. David, Mary Margaret, Emma, and Regina begin their search in the apartment. Eventually, Mary Margaret finds the book in a box. ("A Curious Thing")

After Second Curse

After Regina breaks the curse, Mary Margaret gives birth to a baby boy. Back in the apartment, she and David explain to Emma that the baby's name will only be revealed during a traditional ceremony; much like the one she would have had if raised in the Enchanted Forest. Emma is not sure that is a good idea, but the couple explains they'd rather have an informal celebration at the diner. Henry arrives carrying a newspaper to show an apartment listing in town that he and Emma could possibly utilize, but she is still determined to go back to New York. When questioned by Mary Margaret, Emma avoids the topic and asks Henry to help her parents pick a name for her new baby brother. ("Snow Drifts")

When a giant snowman threatens Storybrooke, Emma tries to stop it with magic, but she fails. Regina, however, succeeds in destroying the creature. Following this, a relieved Emma approaches Hook, who she has been avoiding, and invites him to go home with her and watch Netflix. ("A Tale of Two Sisters")

During an evening, Mary Margaret puts her son, Neal, in his crib for the night. Henry asks her what babies dream about, so David answers with bullfighting while Emma says laser tag. Perplexed, Mary Margaret states that's not true, but Henry humorously replies they are joking. In exasperation, the overworked mother states that'll be funny to her again once she's had enough sleep. At the counter, Emma sees Henry assembling a basket of chocolate, DVDs, ice cream and red wine. Henry says it's for Regina, especially the red wine since Google confirms that it's good for getting over a breakup. However, he notes that the search engine did not say what to do when a boyfriend's dead wife time travels from the past into the present; alluding to Regina's heartbreak since her former lover's wife has returned. Suddenly, a raven arrives at the window with a note from Regina to Henry. From reading it, Henry is hurt that Regina doesn't want to see him, and he flees to the diner. Later, David leaves, after a town blackout, for Storybrooke's border with Emma to investigate. While he's gone, Granny, Happy and Leroy persuade Mary Margaret that she has to fix the power outage. Soon after Mary Margaret refuels the circuit, David, Hook and their new-found ally, Elsa, return to the apartment. The trio warms up Emma, who was exposed to extreme temperatures, as the power returns. Before Henry makes hot cocoa for Emma, she apologizes for not being much help earlier at the diner. Desperate to find her sister, Anna, Elsa uses a shepherd's crook and hears her heartbeat. Soon, Mary Margaret comes home. Following a quick introduction, David promises they will help Elsa find Anna since their family never abandons hope. From this, Henry realizes he should not give up on Regina, either. ("White Out")

As Emma prepares for her first date with Hook, Mary Margaret and David bring out records of all the residents from the first and second curses so they can search for any sign of Anna. Stepping out in her date outfit, Emma asks for her parents and Elsa's opinions, to which they agree she looks amazing. Hook arrives in the apartment and Emma invites him to leave before David decides to give paternal advice. By evening's end, Emma returns home as an excited Mary Margaret queries her on how the date went. Awkwardly, Emma excuses herself by saying goodnight, but this doesn't stop Mary Margaret and David's chatter, to which Emma says, from another room, that she can still hear them. ("The Apprentice")

When Mary Margaret and her husband plan to spend quality time together, they request Belle to babysit Neal at the apartment. As they watch Belle hold Neal in her arms, David quietly reassures Mary Margaret that everything will be fine. While he points out if anything goes wrong. Later, Returning home before David, Mary Margaret plays with Neal. When her husband arrives, the couple discusses a prisoner's escape from the sheriff's station. ("Breaking Glass")

One night, as Mary Margaret lays Neal in the crib, David arrives with Hook and Elsa and says they did not find Emma, who ran away after her magic went out of control. Regretting her behavior earlier that day, Mary Margaret remarks to David how unsupportive they acted towards their daughter. ("The Snow Queen")

While his family spends the night looking for Emma, Henry himself sneaks out of the apartment to find his mother. After failing to find Emma, Mary Margaret returns home with Elsa, David, and Hook. As they wonder about Emma's whereabouts, Henry returns; revealing he found Emma, who unwillingly hurt him. Hearing that, Mary Margaret takes him to the bathroom to clean his wound. Regina arrives to see her son and brings a potion to locate Emma. Shortly after, Emma phones Mary Margaret stating she will get rid of her own magic. Worried, Hook lies about going to find his phone in David's truck, but instead, he steps out to call Emma. Since she doesn't pick up, he goes to find her. As they observe a family photo, David and Mary Margaret discuss Emma's decision. David reasons they should support their daughter if not having magic is crucial to her endeavor to be ordinary and happy. Elsa, overhearing them, silently disagrees and leaves the apartment; taking the potion with her to track Emma. Upstairs, Regina tries to talk to a non-compliment Henry about what happened with Emma. When she magically heals his injury, he expresses disappointment over not harnessing magic himself. Henry believes his inability to help Emma comes from a lack of magic, but Regina helps him see he's special in his own way. Leaving the boy to rest, Regina talks to Mary Margaret and shyly admits spending the night with Robin Hood. The women are interrupted by David, who informs Regina that Emma is giving away her magic, which Regina opposes; given her experience with trying to make Henry look "normal" because of a fear of losing him. This changes the couple's opinion of Emma's magic when they notice Elsa and the potion are gone. They and Henry then head out to trace Emma's car. ("Smash the Mirror")

One morning, as Mary Margaret resumes her teaching job at school, Granny babysits Neal. Watching them from the apartment's second-floor balcony, Emma smiles happily as life is back to the normal. Upstairs, she puts on her jacket and goes out to meet Hook by the pawnshop. Later on, while in the kitchen, Mary Margaret gets a phone call from Emma, in which her daughter informs her about Cruella De Vil and Ursula possibly coming to town since they are helping to give information about the town's latest terror, the Chernabog. ("Darkness on the Edge of Town")

Having a nightmare in which Maleficent, Cruella and Ursula steal her baby son, Mary Margaret awakens and hurries to check up on Neal, who sleeps in safety. Finding an insomniac David sitting on the stairs, she tells about the bad dream as he relates similar fears about the trio revealing their dark secret involving Maleficent. After pouring himself a drink, David agrees that they must do anything to prevent their secret to be revealed to Emma. Later on, the couple meets in the kitchen, where David shows Mary Margaret a totem of Maleficent's that he stole from Cruella and Ursula, leading her to believe the twosome wants to revive the witch. To stop them, the couple decides they must destroy Maleficent's ashes from beneath the library so that she cannot be resurrected, but they eventually fail. Mary Margaret, worried the revived Maleficent will reveal her and David's past, has Regina go undercover to find out what the villains want. ("Unforgiven")

As David and Mary Margaret tell Emma about Regina's dealings, they all enter the apartment. Emma is concerned things could get dangerous, but Mary Margaret lies, stating the plan was Regina's idea. Their daughter then asks when Regina was supposed to check in with them, and after a silent moment, her parents admit it was supposed to be an hour ago, but they've heard nothing from her. Later on, they learn Regina succeeded in infiltrating the villains' circle and she ends up kidnapping Pinocchio for them. Mr. Gold, wishing to question him about the Author, reverts the boy into August. ("Enter the Dragon")

After August is rescued, he is taken by Emma and her parents to recuperate at their apartment. While he is asleep, Regina arrives, under orders from the villains to steal a storybook page, which features a door that leads to the trapped Author. Before this, Regina talks to Emma about her strange dream in which she and Robin Hood reunited, but the Evil Queen attacked them. Emma believes the nightmare is Regina's subconscious fear of becoming a villain again, but the latter senses the Evil Queen was trying to protect Robin Hood from something. Desiring to reconnect, she asks Emma to track down his current contact details. When August stirs awake, Henry calls both of his mothers over. August is displeased to see Regina, but with reassurance from Emma, he tells them a secret about the door illustration. While August previously led Mr. Gold into believing the door is in another physical location, in truth, the illustration itself is an entrance to the Author. ("Poor Unfortunate Soul")

At the apartment, while Emma and Regina debate how to proceed since finding out about the door illustration, Henry alerts them to August's depleting condition, so they take him to the nunnery to recover. While they are gone, David and Mary Margaret return home, where Hook informs them about the villains' plans to use the Author to darken Emma's heart. When Emma learns the same news from him, she insists only she can decide her own fate. Terrified of the Author's power to rewrite stories, especially Emma's, Mary Margaret storms out as David goes to console her. Later, Hook becomes jealous after noticing Emma is worried about August. Emma convinces him her friendship with August is completely platonic, as she has always had trouble making friends, since losing her childhood best friend. Suddenly, Maleficent's sleeping spell puts them to sleep. Henry, immune to the spell, flees with the storybook to the Sorcerer's mansion, just before the villains show up to search the apartment for the illustration. Finding nothing, they then head to the mansion to get the door page from Henry. Once the sleeping spell wears off, David and Mary Margaret finally confess their dark past to their daughter, in which they sacrificed Maleficent's child to ensure Emma would not become evil. Disappointed by their lies, Emma leaves the apartment to be alone. ("Best Laid Plans")

After the Author, Isaac, is freed and disappears on his own accord, Emma and her parents return to the loft, unable to find him. An argument ensues when David and Mary Margaret defend their decision to take the Apprentice's deal to keep Emma's goodness intact. She, however, cannot accept they harmed an innocent life to make it work. Walking in with Hook, Regina reveals Zelena has been pretending to Marian this whole time, and with Mr. Gold threatening he'll make her sister kill Robin Hood, she wants to go rescue him. This plan takes a backseat after she and Emma receive a video message from Cruella, who wants them to kill the Author or she will kill Henry. David recognizes one of the video stills as somewhere south near the Toll Bridge, and after Emma suggests the Author may know Cruella's whereabouts, he and Mary Margaret work on a locator spell to track him down. Emma opts to scour the woods with Hook and Regina near the Toll Bridge, but before she goes, Mary Margaret questions if she is deliberately avoiding her and David. Instead, Emma states she doesn't trust her parents to be around them at the moment; an answer which devastated them. ("Sympathy for the De Vil")

In a bid to stop Isaac before he rewrites everyone's stories, Henry returns to the loft and hurries upstairs to look for the door illustration key, which is needed to trap the Author. Downstairs, Hook dumps out Henry's backpack to find the Once Upon a Time book and look for the door illustration. Instead, Isaac brings everyone into a new reality in the Heroes and Villains book, while he himself leaves town to live out his own happy ending. Since Henry was born in the real world, he remains unaffected, later waking up alone in the apartment. With no one left in Storybrooke, he takes the door illustration and key with him out of town to look for his family. ("Operation Mongoose Part 1")

After Henry harnesses the quill and reverts Isaac's stories, everyone returns to the last place they were in Storybrooke before the change happened. Waking up on the loft's second floor, Henry is greeted by Hook, who came up to check on him. The boy then rushes out to look for both of his mothers before Emma arrives at the loft asking for Hook. In the midst of a reunion hug with Mary Margaret, David points out where he last saw Hook in the kitchen before they were taken away by Isaac. Emma considers the possibility of him actually dying in the alternate reality and not coming back, but then, Hook calls to her from the upstairs balcony. Elated, she goes up, hugging him, before they both fall onto the bed. Emma tries to declare her love for him, but out of fear, she stops mid-sentence and instead thanks him for sacrificing his life for her in the alternate reality. ("Operation Mongoose Part 2")

The day after Emma has become the Dark One and fled to another realm, Robin stays with Roland in Mary Margaret's loft to read a story to his son. Roland falls asleep upstairs, so Robin goes downstairs, where Regina rushes in to warn him about Zelena escaping. She urges him to get Roland and leave with her, but when he doesn't budge, she asks what's wrong. Robin, happy that she is concerned about him, leans in and kisses her, but he quickly takes a step back, realizing she is Zelena in disguise. Zelena lifts her glamour spell and congratulates him on a job well done, stating that he was able to see through her disguise because of true love, yet he wasn't able to do the same when she was pretending to be Marian. Robin questions what she wants, to which Zelena reveals she is after him since he is the key to getting the Apprentice's wand from Regina. ("The Dark Swan")

After Third Curse

After Zelena gives birth to a daughter, she is unexpectedly kidnapped by Emma. In her absence, Robin Hood later takes his newborn to the loft, where he and Regina come to an agreement that, despite the extenuating circumstances of how the child was conceived, Zelena is still the child's mother. With hopes Zelena's love for her own daughter can change her, Regina leads her sister into the loft to meet the baby. Robin concedes to Zelena that both he and Regina will allow her to be a part of the child's life as long as he or Regina are present during these visits. He then hands the infant to Zelena, who coos over her new baby daughter. ("Broken Heart")

Discovering Mr. Gold used Hook's sacrificial death to regain his Dark One powers, Emma threatens him into helping her reopen the Underworld portal so she can rescue Hook, or she'll reveal his sordid betrayal to Belle. Once he consents to the deal, she returns to the loft to tell her family and allies about the plan. Her parents are less than thrilled by the news, but Emma reasons that Killian's death has been tainted because of Mr. Gold, and thus, she doesn't believe he deserves to be dead. David reminds her that taking a soul out of the Underworld requires another soul to take its place, while Mary Margaret becomes worried over Emma possibly descending back into darkness when she just got rid of it. Emma promises she won't, and that instead, she is giving into love. Going by her parents' past example, she explains that she and Hook can share a heart, an idea Regina believes is possible. ("Swan Song")

Following her departure from the Underworld to return home, Snow reunites with her son Neal and resumes living with him at the apartment. After King Arthur escapes from his cell, Merida and Walter report the news to Snow, who is displeased to learn he fled because Walter fell asleep on guard duty. Merida defends her decision to leave Walter with the prisoner in the absence of Snow and her friends, who had gone to the Underworld to save Hook. Settling aside blame in the situation, Snow decides the best thing to do now is find Arthur, and she sends Merida and Walter to gather the other dwarves for a search party. Once they are gone, Snow laments to Neal about her family not being back yet, but then, David walks in to greet her. She and her husband share a kiss, before she passes Neal to him, and hugs Henry as he comes in. A downtrodden Emma is last to walk in, and she fills in her mother on what happened with Hook. Emma regrets going to the Underworld, while Snow comforts her over the good they did there by helping people move on. ("Ruby Slippers," "Last Rites")

The day after Mr. Gold absorbs Storybrooke's magic into a piece of the Olympian Crystal, the heroes gather in the loft to locate him in town. Regina comes looking for Henry, who sent her a text message about getting rid of something that's been causing problems for everyone. Soon, Mr. Gold also arrives, revealing Henry stole the crystal and has left town to destroy it. Regina leaves to pursue Henry, and Emma follows her out. ("Only You")

After making a deal with Mr. Gold, David receives a card with information about a coin he once gave to his father. In the loft, he tells Snow that the card reveals his father was killed by someone, rather than him getting drunk and falling to his death in a ravine. Snow asks him to not dig up the past by seeking revenge on whoever murdered his father and be at peace knowing his father did not succumb to drinking again. David agrees to burn the card and put the matter behind him, but after Snow leaves the room, he changes his mind and keeps the card. ("The Other Shoe")

Emma enters the loft, where David, Snow, Hook, Henry, Regina and Jasmine are discussing a plan to find Aladdin. Having followed her there, the serum queen, disguised as Archie, reveals to Emma's family that she has a secret. Emma then admits she's been having visions about her own death, and while everyone reacts in dismay and concern over to her secret, the Queen leaves unnoticed. Regina eventually leaves for her vault to find another way to track Aladdin. Upstairs, Henry and Jasmine talk about how they were the ones who made both Emma and Aladdin accept their roles as Saviors, which may ultimately lead them to their deaths. In a chat with Emma, Snow forgives her for not being truthful sooner, however, she is concerned Hook may not forgive Emma for her indiscretion. Their conversation is interrupted by David, who just got a call from Leroy about Archie's disappearance. Snow and Emma then realize who they saw earlier was not Archie, but the Queen, and that the real Archie was kidnapped by her. Later on, having failed to track Archie, Snow and David return home to find Emma, Henry, Hook, and Regina talking about an item that could free Emma from her fate as a Savior. Emma vows not to use the shears, and instead, find an alternative or accept that she is meant to die. Hook amicably supports her decision, to which Emma apologizes to him and swears not to keep any more secrets from him. She then entrusts him with disposing of the shears so she won't be tempted to use them on herself. ("Street Rats")

One night, Snow is asleep in her bed but ends up in the woods after the Queen teleports her there. Later at the loft, the heroes are unable to figure out how to combat the Queen's Acheron water, but Mother Superior provides a solution in the form of a sapling born from the first spark of true love, which can defeat the Queen. However, she warns they cannot risk the villains finding out about their plans. Regina, recalling that the Queen and Mr. Gold recently struck up an alliance, suspects there may be more than just business to the partnership, as she awkwardly reveals she and Rumplestiltskin have always had chemistry with each other in the past, although nothing came of it until now. She then writes a note, under the guise of being the Queen, to lure Zelena to the pawnshop and have her walk in on a tryst between the Queen and Mr. Gold. Once the sapling is destroyed by the Queen, Snow sits in the loft kitchen, contemplating that she and David will have to give up their hearts after all. They both recall the last memory they saw when they touched the sapling, with both of them insisting the other wasn't present for that event, only to realize they were because they met at a time when neither of them saw each other's faces. After Snow is placed under the sleeping curse and hidden away by the Queen, David and Emma rush back to the loft to search for her. David, upon seeing his wife's empty bed, realizes the Queen must have taken her to the woods again. ("Heartless")

While David is under the sleeping curse, he is brought back to the loft, where Snow watches over him. Snow is miserable over being separated from her husband because the Queen cursed both of them, in that neither person can be awake at the same time. Regina wants to go after the Queen and hurt her for what she's done, but Emma convinces her not to. Deciding not to give up, Snow writes a note for David, with plans of waking him up from the curse. Snow goes to give him true love's kiss, but upon realizing the Queen is spying on them through the mirror, she shatters the glass. Soon after, the couple forms a system of leaving notes and presents for each other when either of them is awake. Snow records a video of herself with baby Neal, and David makes breakfast for her and gives her flowers. Emma and Regina's attempt to trap the Queen in a mirror goes awry, with the Queen imprisoning them in it instead. Disguised as Regina, the Queen returns to the loft and tells the heroes that the mission went well. Snow praises "Regina" for having the strength to get rid of the monstrous Queen, while the Queen hides her annoyance in order not to provoke suspicion. Refocusing her attention on Henry, the Queen helps Henry pick out a tie for his date with Violet. That night, it is Snow's turn to wake David up, but she can't think of anything to write because she misses him too much, and instead crumples the paper into her fist before giving him true love's kiss. When David awakens and finds the blank paper, he recognizes Snow's message to him and then notes out loud that he misses her too. ("I'll Be Your Mirror")

In the loft, as Aladdin, Henry and Snow look on, Jasmine rubs the lamp to summon out the genie inside it, but instead, only genie bracelets pop out. She becomes upset that her chance to find Agrabah again is no longer possible, but Aladdin decides to help by putting the bracelets on himself. Jasmine is then stricken over him sacrificing his own freedom for her, although Aladdin comfortingly assures her it is worth it. After becoming a genie, Aladdin is sent into the lamp. ("Changelings")

On another day, while Snow is in the cursed sleep, Emma watches over her as she talks to her allies about killing the Queen with the sword from her vision. Henry objects to the plan, out of fear she will die as the vision has foretold. Emma insists she can't back down even if there's the possibility this fight may be her last, and that she needs to be the Savior. Henry, upset at her decision, retorts that she is also his mom. As soon as David receives a call from Leroy about the Queen being spotted on the street, he notifies the others, and they all head out together. Following Emma's disappearance because of the Queen's wish, David, Jasmine, and Hook return to the loft while Regina goes to confront the Queen and rescue Emma. David, deciding not to wait for the Queen to do damage with a second wish, resolves to get the lamp. Hook cautions him not to go in without a plan, so David tells him and Jasmine to meet him at the sheriff's station in an hour. After the heroes retrieve the lamp from the Queen, David begins to feel ashamed about his attempt to murder the Queen and fears he is becoming like his brother. Hook convinces him that one mistake doesn't change who he is, and then encourages him to wake up Snow with true love's kiss. Just then, Jasmine arrives with Aladdin. She suggests that David use his second wish to uncurse himself and Snow, but David declines and forfeits the lamp to her. Knowing she owes it to herself and her people, Jasmine resolves to do what is necessary, and after getting Aladdin's support, she uses the lamp to take both of them to Agrabah. Sometime later, Leroy drops by the loft to show David, Hook, and Henry a caged serpent, who is actually the Evil Queen, and he tells them the transformation was done by a guy in a cloak. Realizing this is the same person who kills Emma, David then asks what he looked like. ("Wish You Were Here")

The morning after a fruitless search for Emma's would-be killer, David sits by a sleeping Snow, vowing to her that he will fix things and bring Emma home soon. By the counter, Hook had a brief conversation on the phone with the dwarves, who are looking for the mystery man in the woods. He then hangs up and tells David that the dwarves haven't found any sign of him. Belle arrives to the loft, revealing that the man is actually her grown son, Gideon, and begs for their help to find him so she can talk him out of killing Emma. David and Hook agree to give her a chance to do this, but if it doesn't work, they will use force to stop Gideon. ("Tougher Than the Rest")

After David sees his deceased father Robert's spirit, he goes home to the loft and sits on his side of the bed, while Snow is sleeping soundly on the other end. He plays a video message on his phone, in which Snow tells him how hard it's getting to be separated from him and that she misses him. When David sees Robert in the loft, he angrily confronts him, as he doesn't believe he owes anything to his drunk of a father. Robert, however, insists David must know the truth about his death. By the next morning, David has put together a whole posterboard of clues related to Robert. Hook enters the loft, in preparation to ask for David's blessing so he can propose to Emma, but he never gets the chance since David pulls him into a mission to help him steal potions from Emma's shed. Upon obtaining the potions, they return to the loft to use them in a concoction for locating Robert's whereabouts prior to his death. As the instructions in the spellbook dictate, they turn counterclockwise, and then, David pours the liquid in a larger beaker before putting Robert's coin in it. Hook opens a map of the Enchanted Forest, and David rolls the coin onto it, with the coin landing on Pleasure Island as Robert's last known location. Following David's resolution over his father's death, he finally gets some rest in the loft as Snow talks to Regina about Robin of Locksley. Regina admits she and Robin kissed, however, she felt nothing from it. She begins to question why Robin could cross over from the Wish Realm if it wasn't to be with her, and Snow suggests there is no reason and that perhaps he could because part of him is real despite the place he originates from. ("Murder Most Foul")

Sometime after Emma accepts Hook's marriage proposal, she goes to the loft to share her happy news with Snow and Henry. Her son asks how Killian surprised her by popping the question, to which Emma admits she didn't give Hook time since she found the ring before he could. In response to Snow's excitement about the wedding, Emma clarifies that she would rather hold it off for now since she wants to deal with Gideon first. Regina, with Zelena, arrives at the loft with bad news about the Queen's escape, but Zelena interrupts her sister's announcement to take note of Emma's ring, which prompts Regina to give her congratulations to the blonde. ("Page 23")

While a downtrodden Emma sits on top of the loft counter, David paces back and forth after learning from her about Hook's role in his father's death. Emma apologizes, stating that she had hoped she wouldn't need to tell him, to which David asks where Hook is and if he didn't have the guts to be honest with him in-person. Emma then reveals she had given Hook an ultimatum because of his lying and told him to reach out to her when he was ready to trust her, but that Leroy saw Hook departing onto the Nautilus, which she takes to mean he wasn't ready. David, seeing how hurt Emma is over Hook leaving her, consoles her with a hug. ("A Wondrous Place")

With Henry's page of symbols splayed open on the loft table, Emma looks up at Regina with a perplexed look as the mayor explains that Isaac implied the hieroglyphics have something to do with the final battle. Emma checks the storybook by flipping it to the back blank page, where she notes that it really is the end of the story. David is regretful about not seeing this coming since Rumplestiltskin, back in the Enchanted Forest, mentioned a final battle, but he had assumed it was in relation to Emma breaking the first Dark Curse. After Emma vows to not lose, she tells Henry to come to the library with her so they can research the symbols. She hands him his binder and becomes startled when her hand starts trembling. Henry tries to assure her that everything will be all right, which Emma shakily agrees with as she tries to calm down. Following Emma and Henry's departure from the loft, David laments about not wanting Emma to be alone and without her family when the final battle comes. Regina insists Emma will have to settle for only one of her parents being there since the sleeping curse is still intact, but when David presses her to break it, she admits she has a potion that requires more testing to ensure it's safe. David, not wanting to waste any more time, persuades Regina that he is willing to do whatever it takes to be there for Emma. Later after the potion fails to work, Snow records a video clip to tell her husband about the fail-safe that the Queen put on their hearts and that they will soon be permanently asleep. As David is in the loft watching the recording, he notices pink petals in the background of the clip. Zelena recognizes them as pixie flower petals, which David knows can break the curse. While Regina, Henry, and Zelena work on locating the flowers, David says goodnight to Emma since Snow needs to be awake so she can help track where the petals are blowing from. Emma asks how he is able to cope with being separated from her mom, and David tells her of his continued belief that Snow is fighting as hard for him as he is for her. He then persuades Emma to believe in Hook, who is likely doing everything he can to return to her. After getting a pixie flower, Emma brings a drowsy Snow back to the loft, where Regina collects some of the flower dust into a vial. Before it can be given to Snow, a shadowy figure flies in, revealing itself as Hook's shadow as it gives Emma a broken wand to help defeat the Black Fairy. Emma, seeing the shadow drop Killian's hook, concludes he is in danger. Snow pushes Emma to use the dust to get to Hook and that she and David once used the same dust to find her, except they chose to let her grow up and become the Savior. Creating a portal from the dust, Emma returns back to the loft with Hook, who makes up with her and proposes to her again. After Emma accepts, Regina thinks up another way to the sleeping curse by having everyone ingest a liquid form of the curse. ("Awake")

At the loft, Henry enters through the front door and forgets to close it after he goes to sit down on the couch to work on cracking the hieroglyphics. David, upon going up the stairs to the loft, notices the door is open and readies his gun to fire at the perpetrator, but then he sees Henry inside. He calls to his grandson, who doesn't hear him at first because he is so engrossed with using his Author pen. David inquiries about whether he was using the pen to change things when he's not supposed to, but Henry demonstrates by writing "Emma wins the final battle" to prove that he couldn't even if he wanted to. Henry reveals his frustration over not being able to use the pen to decipher the symbols and he wonders what's the use of these powers if he can't help anyone. Believing his grandson needs a much-needed break, David gets him involved with planning Emma and Hook's wedding. ("Where Bluebirds Fly")

After Fourth Curse
At some point after the final battle is won, David, Snow, and their son Neal eventually move out of the loft and into a bigger house. ("The Final Battle Part 2")

During Fifth Curse
Hoping to trigger Roni into remembering that she is really the Evil Queen Regina who adopted Henry when he was a baby, Lucy returns to her old room to look for the fairytale storybook. When Roni finds her there, Lucy explains she is trying to replicate how Snow White once found the book in her own closet and that the book can make people remember if they touch it, as she read about in Henry's novel. ("Wake Up Call")

Trivia

On-Screen Notes

  • The apartment number is 3[2] and it is located on the upper floor of the building.[3] ("Desperate Souls," "Smash the Mirror" et al.)
  • According to a set of letter props created for the episode "The Shepherd," the street address is 3–316 Langdon Street.[4] Mary Margaret can be seen opening one of the letters on-screen, but most of the address is too blurry to read.[5]
    • Mary Margaret's old servant, Johanna, also lives on Langdon street; her street number is 42. This is seen on the back of the envelope of the letter that Mary Margaret receives from her on her birthday.[6] ("The Queen Is Dead")

Location

  • The location of the loft is portrayed inconsistently. It is often implied to be situated right across the street from the pawnshop, meaning that it is in the same block as the clock tower building, in a location that does not actually exist in Steveston Village,[7] likely in the area of Storybrooke Dental, which is located across the street from the pawnshop.[8] This location is prominently used in "Best Laid Plans," where the pawnshop is clearly visible through the window as Maleficent's sleeping spell approaches.[9] The location is also hinted at in previous episodes:
    • When Mary Margaret is inside the apartment in "True North," Emma calls her on the phone from outside and asks Mary Margaret to come outside and meet her. The two meet across the street from the clock tower building.[10]
    • After Mary Margaret leaves the apartment in "7:15 A.M.," she is headed away from the clock tower.[11]
    • When David is cleaning Mary Margaret's car in "What Happened to Frederick," it is parked in front of Storybrooke Coffee Co, next to Jolene's Arts & Crafts,[12] which are both located in the same block as the clock tower,[13] opposite the street from the pawnshop. When Emma finds Henry's storybook, Emma's car is parked next to the clock tower building.[14]
    • When David talks to Mary Margaret in "The Return," Mary Margaret comes out from behind Jolene's Arts & Crafts.[15] Mary Margaret's car is parked in front of the same building.[16]
    • When Emma and August leave the apartment together in "The Stranger," they come out from behind Storybrooke Coffee Co,[17] before proceeding to walk down the street, past the clock tower. Emma's car is parked in front of Storybrooke Dental[18] (which is right between Storybrooke Coffee Co and the clock tower).
    • When Emma heads toward the apartment in "New York City Serenade," she begins to walk toward the clock tower building.[19]
  • However, there is also evidence to support that the loft is in the vicinity of Granny's Diner:
    • The bird feeder and birdhouses that Mary Margaret and Henry tend to in "The Shepherd"[20] and "The Evil Queen,"[21] are located behind a white picket fence across the street from George's Taverna and Storybrooke Savings & Loan. These two businesses are situated near Storybrooke Country Bread,[22] the building that is across the street from Granny's Diner. Granny's Diner is approximately fifty meters down the road from the clock tower building.[23]
      • This white picket fence is located next to the Storybrooke Post Office.[24] After Emma and Henry leave the apartment in "The Price of Gold," they walk past the post office[25] and up to Emma's car, which is parked across the street from this building.[26]
      • In "Unforgiven," David Nolan loads up his truck in front of the same fence,[27] across the street from Storybrooke Savings & Loan.[28]
      • The fence features prominently as the exterior setting for the apartment in "Best Laid Plans":
        • When Mary Margaret and David leave the apartment just before Maleficent casts her sleeping spell in "Best Laid Plans," they are walking away from the fence.[29]
        • Later, when Mr. Gold leaves the apartment with Maleficent, Regina and Cruella, they walk across the lawn behind this fence, before getting into Cruella's car, which is parked in front of the same fence.[24] This moment is secretly witnessed by Mary Margaret and David from across the street.
    • When Emma and Mary Margaret offer to let Ruby move in with them in "Red-Handed," all three of them head off in the direction of Granny's Diner, away from the clock tower.[30]
    • In "Operation Mongoose Part 2," after returning to Storybrooke, Emma runs down the main street of town to reunite with Hook at the loft. She runs towards Granny's Diner, away from the clock tower.[31]
    • In addition, when Mary Margaret is eating breakfast in her apartment in "The Thing You Love Most," she is surprised to see that the clock tower is working. However, the clock is facing away from the buildings that are located across the street from the pawnshop,[32] which would make it impossible for her to see the clock if she were living in this area.

Production Notes

  • According to set decorator Mark Lane, the apartment is supposed to be above a store, with a lumber mill out in the back of it. It is also supposed to be just off the water and is meant to have the feel of a fish cannery. The set was purposely filled with working-class antiques one might find in an old apartment in an old town to make it somewhat locked in time. Therefore, there are not a lot of new things in it.[33]
  • According to production designer Michael Joy, the apartment is a kind of modern-day princess type of environment, an echo of Snow White as a romantic character living in the wood. It is supposed to be an industrial space or an old office space. The idea is that Mary Margaret is very earthy and crafty and because she is a teacher who does crafts with her pupils, she took the same do-it-yourself approach to decorate her home. One could imagine she decorated that all by going to garage sales.[34]

Disney

  • The apartment is full of bird motifs (see the "Set Dressing" section under "Set Notes" for more information), a reference to the many birds that Snow White interacts with in the Disney film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. ("The Thing You Love Most" et al.)
  • A planter with two bluebirds singing on a log, sits on Mary Margaret's shelf;[35] mirroring the bluebirds singing on the rafters in the animated movie. ("The Thing You Love Most" et al.)
  • There are two small roe deer figurines in Mary Margaret's apartment,[36] a reference to Bambi. It is also a reference to the roe deer that Snow White interacts with in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. ("The Thing You Love Most," "Heart of Darkness" et al.)
  • While reading Henry's storybook, Mary Margaret has a ceramic blue bird figurine on her nightstand.[37] This is a reference to the bluebirds in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.[38] ("Snow Falls")
  • Mary Margaret has a sugar bowl with a blue bird on top,[39] another reference to the bluebirds from the animated film.[40] ("The Price of Gold" et al.)
    • When Mary Margaret makes herself some tea in "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter," she closes her fingers around the bird,[41] a reference to the bluebird that sits on her hand in the Disney film.
  • There is a sculpted rabbit utensil holder in the kitchen area of Mary Margaret's loft,[42] a reference to the rabbits that Snow White interacts with in the Disney film. ("The Price of Gold" et al.)
  • There is a ceramic teapot with owls on it on Mary Margaret kitchen counter (glimpsed in "That Still Small Voice,"[43] "The Shepherd"[44] and "7:15 A.M.,"[45] and is used by Mary Margaret in "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter"[46]), a reference to the owl that Snow White runs into while fleeing into the forest in the Disney film.
  • In the apartment, there are two framed pictures of small brown birds,[47] one of which is nesting; a reference to the small brown birds that Snow White interacts with in the Disney film, some of which are sitting in a nest in one scene. ("Heart of Darkness" et al.)
  • A bird figurine similar to the bluebirds that Snow White interacts with in the Disney film, is sitting on Mary Margaret's nightstand. This can be seen in "Heart of Darkness,"[48] "Tallahassee,"[49] "The Outsider"[50] and "Welcome to Storybrooke."[51]

Filming Locations

  • The scenes in Mary Margaret's apartment were filmed on a fully-dressed, two-story movie set at The Bridge Studios in Burnaby, where Once Upon a Time was filmed. Everything in the apartment set, including the kitchen sink and the gas stove, was fully functional, which is not always the case on TV sets.[121]
    • The apartment set was built on a studio stage for the first season of Once Upon a Time. For Season Two, the set had to be torn down and be rebuilt on a different stage.[122]
    • The inside of Mary Margaret's bathroom only appears in a single scene: when Zelena escapes through the window in the Season Three episode "Quiet Minds"; even though the room was fully decorated.[123]
    • Despite being a two-story set, the show didn't shoot upstairs for the first three seasons because it was difficult to get cameras on the second level.[121] The top floor of the apartment is explored for the first time in the Season Four episode "Smash the Mirror," where Henry reads comics with Regina in his bedroom.

  33. Mackie, John (October 22, 2011). Fabricating a fairy tale world. Vancouver Sun. Archived from the original on November 10, 2014. “The apartment is supposed to be above a store, and is double-height, which allows for the second-storey loft where Emma sleeps. One wall features a painted brick sign, the other is filled with the type of working-class antiques (a Hoosier cabinet, a painted drop-leaf table, an ancient gas stove, a Bakelite radio) you might find in an old apartment in an old town. "They want it so that they're locked in time a little bit, so there's not a lot of new stuff," he says. "It's supposed to be down on the main street of Steveston. There's a lumber mill out in the back of it, and it's just off the water, so it's supposed to have that feel of a fish cannery."”
